Here, meet owners Tom Curdes, his wife, Rose, and their son, Jon — three people who exemplify the U.S. Lawns spirit of excellence.
Like Father Like Son
When it came to summertime employment as a teenager, Jon Curdes, now 31, didn’t have to look very far. He spent his school vacations working for his father, Tom, at the family’s independently-owned landscaping business, mowing lawns, planting flowers, and plowing snow. Jon was so committed to the industry that he went on to get a degree in turf management.
“I never had another job,” he remembers with a chuckle.
Today, Jon handles the day-to-day operations of the U.S. Lawns location he owns with his father and mother, in Holland, Ohio, just outside of Toledo. The Curdeses converted their independent business to a U.S. Lawns franchise in 2017 and have enjoyed the “power of the network” ever since. It’s allowed them to stay on top of best practices and enjoy vendor relationships that ensure they meet the unique needs of each customer, time and time again.
“It’s really rewarding to be able to work as a family,” says Tom, who manages long-term planning for the business. “Rose and I feel really good about being able to set Jon up for the future.”
The Curdeses are also exceptionally proud of their employees, some of whom have been part of the business for decades. Not surprisingly, they’re treated like family, and the commitment they feel from their employers carries over into their work, from shrub and flower bed maintenance, to tree and lawn care. It always shows pride of ownership and attention to detail — proof that at the end of the day, happy employees make happy customers!
Tom, Rose, and Jon, like all U.S. Lawns owners, are driven not just to meet the expectations of their customers but to exceed them. “We believe in full transparency,” says Tom. “It’s what separates us from a lot of the competition.”
